GTA 6 Gameplay Just Reminded Me Why I Fell for This Series in the First Place

I put real time into GTA V's story, more than once actually. But the multiplayer is what stuck with me. My friends and I logged thousands of hours in that world, making jokes out of nothing, pulling stunts that had no purpose beyond making each other laugh. Then, the way these things go, I drifted away from it. Rockstar's Extended Look just gave me the first real reason to think about coming back.

Twenty-Six Minutes That Actually Delivered

Rockstar premiered GTA 6: An Extended Look on Netflix on August 27, a 26-minute look at gameplay captured entirely in-engine on PlayStation 5. After years of speculation, leaked clips, and a countdown that's dragged on since the first trailer landed in December 2023, an actual sustained look at how this game plays is a different kind of moment than another polished teaser.

Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos carry the story through Leonida, Rockstar's fictional take on Florida, with Vice City sitting at the center of it. What stood out watching this wasn't a single flashy set piece. It was the accumulation of small systems working together: character switching mid-mission, social media woven into the world, customization options that go deeper than I expected walking in.

The Graphics Aren't What I Thought They'd Be, and That's Fine

I'll say this straight: the graphics are a step below what I was expecting going in. After years of trailers built to generate maximum hype, some part of me had built up an image in my head that no actual gameplay footage was ever going to match frame for frame.

What actually won me over wasn't the visual fidelity. It was everything happening inside that world. The environment reacts, the systems layer on top of each other, and the sheer number of things you can apparently do inside Leonida outweighs whatever gap exists between my expectations and the polish of individual character models. A game doesn't need to be the sharpest thing on screen when what's happening inside it is this dense.

Why I'm Not Chasing the Hype Curve Here

Here's where I'll be honest about where GTA 6 sits for me personally. I know it's sitting at the top of nearly everyone's most-anticipated list right now, and I understand why. But I'm more excited for Witcher 3's remaster and its 2027 DLC than I am for this. That's not a knock on GTA 6. It's just where my priorities land when I'm being straight with you.

That said, GTA still holds real territory in my all-time list. It sits alongside Witcher 3, Witcher 2, Assassin's Creed Brotherhood, and Revelations as a series that shaped how I think about gaming. I remember playing Vice City on PSP with friends back in school, passing the console around, laughing at the same dumb stunts we'd later spend thousands of hours repeating in GTA V's online world. That history doesn't disappear just because a different game currently sits higher on my personal list.

Where This Leaves Me

GTA 6 is coming out November 19, and after this Extended Look, I'm genuinely looking forward to it. Not with the same intensity as Witcher 3's return, but with real interest built on a series that's given me some of my best gaming memories, both alone and with friends who made the multiplayer chaos worth every hour we put into it. Watching Jason and Lucia move through Leonida made me want to see the rest of what Rockstar's built, graphics gap and all.

We'll cover every new detail as more comes out ahead of launch.
